Can you build your own sandwich at Firehouse Subs? This article will cover how you can go about doing this, and some options available to help you make a custom sub.

Most of Firehouse’s main sandwiches have different ingredients when it comes to the meats, veggies, condiments, and seasonings.

They also have a decent selection of meats available for all of their subs.

A list of all the condiments and vegetables found on each of the main subs is also available.

Besides the main selections for subs, there is a separate menu that they have called “Build Your Own Sub”. This menu normally comes at a lower price than their other subs.

These options are also known as their “single meats”.

Here is a list of the meats that can be made into custom sandwiches:

  • Chicken
  • Corned Beef
  • Ham
  • Pastrami
  • Roast Beef
  • Turkey

This doesn’t mean that their other meats can’t be used to build a sandwich from scratch. It is just that the other meats are going to normally cost more to do it.

A custom brisket sandwich would just be a brisket either way, since it only has mayo and BBQ sauce before it is changed.

The other meats, like the salami and pepperoni can be used to make a sub too with only these meats. Just request it when you order. Their cash register screen should have the option to pick each add on, with the prices are available for each.

Can You Get Extra Meat At Firehouse?

Yes. You can add extra meat to any sub, for both their main sandwiches and any custom or specialty sub. Double meat doubles the price of the meats on the sandwich while giving you double of all your meats.

Putting extra meats on your sub, along with toppings, can make it difficult to eat, since the meats and vegetables on custom subs are stacked higher and higher with the more additions. The meats and veggies could end up constantly slipping out of the sub.

Any size sub can be ordered with extra meat, but it works best with the larger sizes as opposed to their small 4 inch. The 4 inch sub, if stacked with extra meats and toppings, just ends up looking like a messy tower of food in between two small buns.

If you don’t want double the meat, then you can add on an ounce or more of any of their meat types to your customized sub sandwiches. You don’t have to double the meat of a large sub, which already comes with 6 to 8 ounces of meat.

What Cheeses Do They Have?

The cheeses at Firehouse Subs stays relatively the same. They have 6 different types:

  • Cheddar
  • Provolone
  • Monterey Jack
  • Mozzarella
  • Swiss
  • Pepper Jack

Five of their main sandwiches and all of their build your own subs come with provolone cheese. The five that come with provolone are the meatball subs, the Italian, New York Steamer, Steak & Cheese, and the Hero.

Anytime a custom sandwich is made, they will most likely put provolone cheese on it, but this can be substituted (usually for free) for any of the other cheeses. The cheese can be changed on the main sandwiches too.

Adding extra cheese to your sub will cost extra, which may increase depending on the size of the sub. The amount of cheese added can be requested too. All of their cheeses come as slices, except for the mozzarella.

When they have special subs, sometimes other cheeses will be available, like the beer cheese for instance.

What Condiments Are Available?

Firehouse Subs has a small collection of condiments available besides their hot sauce collection.

  • Captain Sorensen’s Datil Sauce
  • Mayo
  • Deli Mustard
  • Mustard
  • Italian Dressing
  • Au Jus (French Dip)
  • Peppercorn Ranch
  • BBQ Sauce
  • Italian Seasoning
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Oil & Vinegar
  • Balsamic Vinaigrette
  • Honey Mustard

When special subs are available, other condiments can be found at Firehouse, like the thousand island dressing.

Some of these condiments are also used in creation for their salad choices.

What Breads Do They Use?

Firehouse Subs has three main options for their breads.

  • White Bread
  • Wheat Bread
  • Gluten-Free Bread

The white bread and the wheat bread is French bread that can come in either small, medium, or large for their subs. The gluten-free bread only comes in 2 sizes, which are small and medium.

The gluten-free bread is a lot smaller in length and thinner too. The taste of the bread is also not as good as their white and wheat.

During special promotions, other breads are available, like the cornbread. This isn’t a side, it is a sub bread made from cornbread.

What Toppings Do They Have?

Firehouse has a decent amount of veggies available to add unto your subs when ordering. Here are their toppings:

  • Cherry Peppers
  • Banana Peppers
  • Jalapeños
  • Mushrooms
  • Olives
  • Bell Peppers
  • Sauteed Bell Peppers
  • Onions
  • Sauteed Onions
  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers

Veggie Subs

If you don’t want meat on your subs, it is possible to order a veggie sub. It comes with 3 cheeses: provolone, monterey jack, and cheddar. So if you are vegan, order it without the cheese and mayo.

Their veggie sub is decent, and comes with many vegetables of course. This sandwich, like the others, can be customized with additional vegetables. Olives are often added to it. The sub can come either cold or hot.

The main veggies on this sandwich that give it flavor is the sautéed onions and bell peppers heated underneath the melted cheese. The lettuce and tomatoes come cold on this sub.

Other Customization Options

Above are all the main options available for customizing subs at Firehouse for everyone, including vegans. However, there are a few other things that can be done for example.

Any of the subs can be made with lesser bread as an option. This means that they can cut the white and wheat breads thinner, resulting in less bread. There breads are pretty thick, so this does happen from time to time.

You can also get any of the sub sandwiches made without bread. It is easy for them to make, since most of the sub is prepared separate from the bread. They can place all of the veggies and condiments into a salad bowl, with the meat on top.

Meatballs for kids are often made similar to this by placing the meatballs in a soup cup without the bread. The meatballs are already hot, so all they have to do is place the cheese on top of it for it to melt.

Meats can also be mixed together to create new combinations, like roast beef and pastrami for example. I have seen others do this with the ham and corned beef.

It could cost more or the same, depending on the meats you choose, but all of the single meat options should be the same in price if mixed together. As long as extra meat isn’t added.

In other words, all of the meats mixed have to be the same weight in ounces for the selected sub size (2 ounces for small, 4 ounces for medium, 6 to 8 Ounces for large). For the large, it depends on whether it is from the build your own sub menu, or their main selections.

Some of this information may vary in store locations.
